This boat is extremely well equipped and shows pride of ownership throughout!

This boat was custom built and designed by the extremely knowledgeable seller and she is the last Willard trawler built of any type or length.  She was custom built for the seller who was the Director of the Recreational Division of Willard Marine. She was trucked to Seattle and launched there in 2002. She spent 6 months in that area, cruising the P.N.W and then cruised back to Long Beach where she was shown at local boat shows.  The seller then cruised her to La Paz Mexico with the Baja HaHa and was subsequently cruised throughout the Sea of Cortez for the following 10 years.

Manufacturer Provided Description
The Willard 40 Pilothouse Trawler has a true full displacement, ballasted hull providing maximum stability and seakindliness for vessels of this size. The economy of operation and range are outstanding with the Willard 40 burning only 3 gallons of diesel fuel per hour at a cruising speed of 8 knots. This husky hull is superior in following seas, thanks to its long, full keel and double ended design. The raised Willard 40 pilothouse model offers a large queen-size stateroom forward and a utility room with work bench and washer and dryer space, or two double staterooms. These boats are only built-to-order, so the builder has the flexibility to modify the interior arrangement to suit the customer's requirements. Willard Marine has been building trawler yachts since the early 1960s, starting with the classic Vega 36 series designed by William Garden, N.A.

Seller’s comments

Advantages of Willard 40 Trawler over similar full displacement trawlers in this size range.

  • Fully ballasted hull. 7000 pounds of lead encapsulated in the keel.
  • Fine entry at the sailboat style bow to prevent pounding and hobby-horsing in a head sea.
  • Rounded canoe style stern to prevent yawing in a following sea like a flat stern or “sugar scoop” stern.
  • Canoe stern means virtually no wake at any speed or any seas.
  • Relatively narrow beam means a more easily driven hull in any kind of seas..
  • Superior fuel efficiency of 5 to 6 nautical miles per gallon at cruising of 7 to 7.5 knots because of the easily driven hull.
  • True Open Ocean, blue water capable circumnavigation possibility because of fuel efficiency.
  • Low “A/B ratio” (ratio of above water mass to below water mass) means low windage.
  • Solid fiberglass hull and cored fiberglass topsides means minimal upkeep and maintenance
  • No need for active or passive stabilizers because of the lead keel deep in the water and low
  • Extra thick safety glass in all windows provide superior light and views in all living spaces while providing protection against breaking seas.
  •  Extra wide overhang at living area means greater safety from breaking seas.
  • Moderate displacement means need for smaller ground tackle.
  • Industrial Tractor based and marinized John Deere turbo diesel is particularly fuel efficient, quiet, and environmentally less polluting with parts available world-wide.
  • Engine is sized large enough to power through large seas.
  •  Engine is cooled by a keel cooler which means no sea water is introduced into the interior of the engine block.
  • Boarding gates both port and starboard mean boarding in true yacht manner.
  • Deployable boarding platform at stern for Med mooring.
  • Dockside power outlets both port and starboard for convenient deployment of power cord in out-of-the-way location.
  • Upper boat deck is large enough for dinghy stowage safety.
  •  All liquid fuel systems aboard are diesel which eliminates the need to carry an alternate fuel such as propane
  • Dual fuel tanks have clean out ports at the top of the tanks
  • Superior tankage aboard – 700 gallon aluminum fuel tanks, 300 gallon stainless steel water tank, and 75 gallon fiberglass waste tank.
  •  Integral fiberglass waste tank at bow waterline serves as a collision barrier along with two more watertight collision barriers in the interior of the hull.
  •  Two 6” PVC conduits from engine room to bow provide convenient chases for adding wiring and plumbing for additional systems.
  • All systems are easily accessed for easy serviceability.
  • Many sixty year old Willard fiberglass trawlers are still in service today.
  • Strong and active Willard Boat Owners group on the Internet.
  • Built to mil-spec (military specifications) by one of the largest military contractors in the US.
  • Made in the USA in Anaheim, California. Factory has been in business 60+ years and is still going strong and willing to provide assistance.
