These great vessels were designed & built by Ackerman at his Boatworks in Newport Beach, California. This particular example of the genre' was built & launched in 1959 of multilayer hand-laid-up heavy fiberglass over continuous seamless marine ply, they are are known for their toughness. The Newport 40' Ketch's are widely recognized as outstanding economy cruisers incorporating both comfort and performance as well as stout construction and roominess. With great light & ventilation down below and lots of storage space, these capable vessels are widely recognized as excellent tropical and cold weather boats. This Newport 40 features an updated Yanmar diesel engine with 854 hrs, Newer wiring, radar, autopilot, watermaker, inverter, SSB radio, aluminum spars and full cruising keel with cutaway forefoot.

This boat shows in poor exterior cosmetic condition and is in need of full exterior re paint and bright work including bottom and spar repainting.  The interior cosmetic condition for a boat of this age shows very well. 

 The owner of this vessel has moved overseas and her insurance has lapsed. Because of this this boat is being sold as/is, where is and this is reflective in the sales price. A buyer is welcome to do whatever surveys and inspections one can do while in berth but this vessel cannot be taken out of her slip for sea trials or for out of the water haul out inspection due to the liability of being uninsured. Actual structural/mechanical condition of vessel is unknown to broker as there has not been a recent survey conducted on the vessel. Any buyer whom is interested in purchasing this vessel assumes all risk and liability with the purchase.

The Newporter 40 Ketch, designed by Clarence E. Akerman and built at Dorchester Shipyard.  This was a very successful design with over 125 built, and were popular on both the East and West Coasts.  Known for their comfortable and spacious accommodations and good sailing and handling, the Newporter 40s have cruised extensively.

This classic pilothouse ketch with clipper bow and 6' bowsprit would make an excellent choice for comfortable cruising or for a very comfortable liveaboard. She is very solidly built of fiberglass over plywood and has a very roomy interior with 3 sleeping cabins and plentiful storage. Windows surround the pilothouse which contains the galley and dining area, making them bright with natural light and very well ventilated. The ketch-rigged ketch sail plan is very stable underway and combined with a well-ballasted full keel, provides a very sea-kindly ride. 

This vessel underwent a full professional restoration approx 15-20 years ago including such items as new aluminum masts and standing rigging, a new engine, new ships electrical, new water maker, new cabin sole, cabinetry & woodwork. Unfortunately she has fallen on rough times the last few years and needs some TLC such as full exterior paint, bottom paint and sails to bring her back to her former glory. Actual structural  and mechanical condition of vessel is unknown to broker as there has not been a recent survey conducted on the vessel.  Dependent on survey findings, at this inexpensive asking price she could be an excellent choice for anyone looking for a full restoration project.

Accommodations

Overnight accommodations are provided for six passengers in four berths. With interior headroom of over 6’ in the saloon and in the doghouse, this three cabin layout is great for liveaboard. The cabin layout includes forward stateroom, main saloon, starboard galley, port head, and raised doghouse. Forward stateroom includes double V-berth, chain locker, hanging locker and privacy door. Aft is saloon and starboard U-shaped galley. Saloon features include single settees to port and starboard, under-settee storage drawers, teak storage cabinets. Opposite galley is head. Head features include, sink, marine toilet, vanity, medicine cabinet, shelves and privacy door. Up steps from the saloon is the doghouse with full all-around view of your surroundings, raised convertible dinette, floorboard storage drawer, port side nav station, accessory panel, port side storage cabinets, and Newporter plaque with Hull number. Interior features include custom sole, newly painted ceilings and walls, opening ports, escape hatches, fabric covered cushions, curtains, 12-volt light fixtures, 110-volt electrical outlets and lockable companionway door.
