1976 Westsail 28

Some have said that these Beautiful Yachts were created not manufactured!

Inspired by Colin Archer, refined by William Atkin and perfected by W.I.B. Crealock, the Westsail series of cruising sailboats ignited America's passion for serious cruising in stout fiberglass double-ender type boats. Less than 80 of the 28's were produced making them a gem in the Clorox bottle world of today’s boats.  Compared to her big sister, the 32 Westsail, the rig has a taller aspect ratio, the keel is noticeably cut away in the forward sections, and the garboards are less hollow.  The result is a drier ride, more maneuverability, more responsive, tracks closer to the wind, therefore faster than the 32 Westsail.

  This is a factory finished Westsail 28, Hull #3 with many new improvements and upgrades since 2007. This boat is a diamond in the rough as there is still more work to be completed such as finishing the refit of the head, installing a new fresh water system, new headliner, inside/outside paint and varnish as well as the purchase of new electronics and Misc equipment. Having said that, please don’t concentrate on what needs to be done instead look at what already been completed! Some of the refit that’s been done since 2007;  New (2010) Betamarine, 25hp engine with less than 70 hrs, newer rigging, epoxy barrier bottom, removal and non-skidding of teak decks and much more.

General Information on Westsail 28's

Adele is almost cruising ready Westsail 28 Hull #3, a proven blue water boat. More than capable with ample storage capacity for extensive offshore voyaging, but a great coastal cruiser with a good turn of speed. Designed by Herb David, only 78 of these sought after “little-sisters” the W32 boats were ever built!

Departing from the W32 design, Herb David refined the Westsail 28 from the keel up.  A taller rig increased the sail area for enhanced light wind sailing.  The redesigned hull produced a drier ride than the W32, with greater windward ability, maneuverability, and a more responsive helm.  The result is a stout cruiser capable of a reasonable speed. In a review of David's design, Naval Architect Robert H. Perry wrote: “David has done two things in the hull design of the 28 that are distinct departures from the C.A. (Colin Archer) traditions.  The keel is quite cut away forward and the garboards are not as hollow as the traditional model.  The cutaway forefoot should give the 28 more maneuverability and a more responsive feel.  The elimination of the hollow garboards should make the 28 better on the wind than her predecessors.  The effect of this light turn at the garboards is to accentuate the actual fin area of the keel.  The bigger the garboard radius, the less fin area of the keel.  There is also a small advantage in the resultant stability of the yacht.”(Excerpted from Windbag V3No5)

 All teak and mahogany interior. Mid-ship bronze hawse pipes, oversize bronze cleats & bronze winches. Mahogany bowsprit, teak bowsprit decking, SS bow pulpit, SS stern pulpit, SS (oversize) stern boomkin.  Rig set up so main sheet can be controlled by coach roof traveler or from attachment point on heavy-duty SS stern boomkin. A Factory finished boat, put on the hard for over 15 years prior to refit by current owner  between 2004 and 2017 in preparation for re-launch and coastal cruising. 8 Opening Bronze Port Holes w/ Screens. All deck hardware, rails, stanchions, cap rails, port lights winches refurbished or replaced and re-bedded during refit.

Interior and Accommodations

A classic sailing layout. Vee berth forward followed by hanging locker and head. Next aft we have the salon with dinette on starboard and galley to port. Chart table to port with Navigator berth. She will sleep 5 if needed but is more at home with a crew of 2 or 3. 

• Five Sleeping Berths (V berth-double, Dinette-double, spacious Quarter berth-single). Separate head/shower just aft of v-berth.

• Built-in large capacity Ice box
• Manual fresh water hand pump

Galley and Plumbing – Needs permanent water tanks and water hoses re-installed. No dedicated stove/oven aboard. Owner used the Magma BBQ on the stern rail or BBQ’d ashore at Catalina.

Head – new composting head installed in 2015, minimal use, no odor! Heads needs plumbing system installed as well as some cabinetry replaced.

Dinette- Converts to a large double that extends under the side deck, as backrest flips up and table drops down. 

Interior Features

Engine/Mechanical– Engine was re-powered in 2010 with a new Betamarine, 25 hp diesel engine. Since re-power the boat has only been used for day sails and 2 trips to Catalina each summer since. Low hours under 70

Sails/Rigging 

• Tabernacle Mast

• 2016 Mast was un-stepped, inspected, re-stepped and tuned

• Sails are original but all appear to be in good condition- Main, Stay sail, Yankee (x2), +storm try sail

Electrical – boat is currently wired for AC.  New battery charger (dual) installed in 2016.  Basic DC wiring (electric bilge pump – backed up by manual whale gusher -, fans, running lights). 

• No 12 volt cabin lights have been installed yet, owner was planning to upgrade to LED.  All new circuit breaker panel /new circuits and wiring installed in 2015/2016.

• 17.5 gallon fuel tank removed, flushed, cleaned and replaced August 2017
• Serviced whale-gusher manual bilge pump (new rubber components) in December 2016
• Installed new electric bilge pump and larger float switch in December 2016
• New dual battery charger in December 2016.  (Batteries less than 5 years old)
• All new DC wiring and replacement control panel (all new circuits) 2015/2016

Fall 2016 Haul Out

• New through-hulls (engine room and galley)
• Replaced shaft packing, 2 coats of bottom paint
• Stepped mast and replaced all mast lighting (LED) and new mast wiring
• Installed mast-head antenna
• Re-stepped and tuned rigging (by Seatek marine)
• Removed holding old holding tank and capped through-hull. Removed most (not all) head hoses (y-valve and pump out lines to deck fitting remain)

2010 Re power-New Betamarine 25 HP and matched prop. Installed during re-power in spring of 2010.

Pre-2007 Relaunch –

• Replaced all standing rigging 1x19 wire (left original turnbuckles – inspected by Bud Taplin)
• Replaced all running rigging
• 2 coats Interlux bottom epoxy April 2007
• 3 coats Interlux polyurethane (blue) topsides – final coat professionally sprayed
• New Cutlass Bearing (March 2007)
• Teak decks removed, all screw holes epoxied and decks repainted
• All lockers and bilges painted out with interlux Bilge coat
• Raised water line, and filled & fared minor blistering along old waterline. New bottom paint, 2 coats

• Rebuilt bowsprit (5 layers laminated mahogany). A spare Douglas Fir bowsprit is available in owner’s garage
