The sleeping compartment forward has a manual Wilcox-Crittenden marine head and foldout wash basin with a manual fresh water pump. Galley sink and wash basin drain to the bilge sump.

The vessel lighting and accessory power is 12 volt DC supplied by two 90 Ah batteries, a 110 Volt battery charger, and main engine alternator. Interior lights are 12-volt fluorescent fixtures in each compartment. There are two sets of deck lights at the spreaders, and ship's navigation lights, all 12 volts. Sidelights are dual kerosene and 12 volt fixtures.

Sail and Rigging

Bright Star is a traditional gaff rigged schooner which is patterned after the Maine coastal fishing schooner "Coaster 3" yacht designed by Murray Peterson. She has two masts, a mainmast with a gaff-rigged mainsail and main topmast, a foremast with a gaff-rigged foresail and topmast, a club footed forestay-sail, and jib. There are provisions for main and jib top sails, and a jib topsail. Total working sail area is 505 sq ft.

Masts, booms, gaffs, bowsprit and jib-boom are clear air dried fir. Goosenecks, gaff jaws, standing rigging and most hardware is in stainless steel or bronze. The solid fir foremast (4 = in dia,) and solid fir mainmast (5 in dia) are stayed with traditional cross-trees and shrouds terminated in rock maple deadeyes and lanyards fastened to the hull with iron chain-plates. Running rigging is polyester yacht braid. Sails are by Pineapple Sails of Oakland CA. Mainsail and foresail are secured by mast hoops and headsails are hanked-on to stays. She has a clipper bow with bow sprit and jib-boom. There are chain bob stays, jib-boom shrouds, foot-ropes, martingale stays, and dolphin striker.

Deck and Hull

Length overall is 38 feet, length on deck is 30 feet. A strong monocoque hull is formed by strip-planked cedar, monel fastened to 1 3/4 in oak frames on 10 in. centers, which is then laminated with two layers of West System epoxy fiberglass from the keel shoe to topsides toe-rail. The continuous full length 1 in x 1 in Port Orford cedar hull planks are milled crown and curve, glued and screwed vertically and horizontally into the oak frames. There are no plank scarf joints below the water line. This laminated fiberglass over wood system provides a hull structure with uncommon strength and rigidity, and the wood is kept dry. The fiberglass hull has 5 layers of International epoxy barrier coat below the waterline, then bottom paint, and topsides are finish in Sterling linear polyurethane. Any bilge water goes to a fiberglass lined internal sump to assure that the wood hull interior is always dry. Decks and galley sole are 3/4 in thick Teakwood. Coach roof, taffrails, toerails, and interior joinery are in Honduras and Phillipine Mahogany.

Engine and Mechanical

The main engine (only engine) is a 1984 3-cylinder Universal 25 diesel engine, which powers the propeller shaft through a Hurt transmission and gear-belt drive. The propeller is a bronze three blade 13 x 8. Fuel is supplied from three tanks (totaling 60 Gal.) through a single Racor fuel filter and electric auxiliary fuel pump. The engine has a 30 Amp. Alternator to supply 12 VDC power and charge batteries. The engine instruments are located on a panel in the cockpit. Steering is by a wheel and Edson worm gear drive to the rudderpost. There is one manual and one electric bilge pump.
