1979 Catalina Sparkman/Stevens

The Catalina 38's were manufactured by Catalina Yachts of Woodland Hills, California from 1977 to 1990. A total of 366 hulls were produced. The boat was originally designed to IORC rules by the yacht design firm of Sparkman & Stephens for the Yankee Boat Company, which built approximately 30 Yankee 38's. Frank Butler of Catalina Yachts purchased the molds from Yankee. Butler redesigned the interior and give the boat a Catalina-styled deck. He lengthened the mast, shortened the boom, and changed the skeg-hung rudder to a balanced-spade design. Butler's changes resulted in a faster, better sailing boat, and the Catalina 38 was selected to replace the Cal 40 as the official boat of the Congressional Cup, one of the top match-racing regattas in the world. This is the boat that Catalina designed to show her heels to the rest of the fleet. Roomy and spacious with 6'3" headroom, the Catalina 38 is a comfortable cruiser/racer. Her interior boasts abundant paneling, She has a teak and holly sole, cabinetry and trim as well as upholstered cushions in good condition throughout. Her construction is fiberglass reinforced plastic over longitudinal stringers and bulkheads, with additional stiffening in the deck and cabin top areas. This boat was designed to race and sleep a crew of 6-7. Accommodations includes a Large V-berth forward sleeps two with loads of cabinets and drawers. The enclosed head is to port, with WC type toilet, custom tile counter and back splash, vanities & sink, integrated shower and running water and ample storage areas. Across from the head is a hanging locker and more shelf and drawer storage. In the main salon, there is a great U-shaped dinette to port which drops down to a large double berth. Opposite is a 7' settee with a lee cloth, which can sleep one more. Further aft to port is the galley and navigation station to starboard. Her galley also includes granite counter surfaces; electric pressure water, built-in refrigerator/freezer, 3 burner gimbaled stainless steel 3 burner LPG stove/oven, and ample storage areas. There is also a huge aft quarterberth to starboard. A total refurbishment of this yacht was done in 2005 and has had little use other than the seller getting ready  to go cruising. This boat is a true labor of love and must be seen to appreciate.  

Latest Caper was purchased by an engineer with highly artistic talents.   Not only are all the main areas of this boat rebuilt and enhanced, all systems, with the exception of the standing rigging, are near new and have had little use since the refurbishment. Those of you who understand the ability of the Catalina 38's will truly appreciate this boat and the price of what you would be getting.
