Through his career he has designed boats for many well-recognized names in the yachting industry, such as Tayana, Cheoy Lee, Valiant, Baba, Ta Shing, Islander, Passport and Saga. Perry has taught yacht design at Evergreen State College and his renowned reviews of yachts, such as he published in his four Cruising Designs books, by Robert H. Perry and his many design reviews for Sailing magazine, are much sought after.  His reviews are the gold standard for any yacht building company.

THE WHITBY 42’ IN BOB PERRY’S WORDS:

Whitby 42 ~ From my recollection the Whitby 42 came out in 1972. Center cockpits were not new at that time. Many custom boats had been built with center cockpits. But I’m pretty sure it was the Whitby 42 that introduced, mainstream center cockpit configuration to the world of production boat builders.

Ted designed the 42 when he was at the peak of his popularity and he was producing some very good boats. Ted and I are friends and I have been a fan of his work for years. I almost went to work for him. The 42 has aged well and for me it will always represent an important milestone in US production boat building”.
