Abreojos is a traditional looking pilothouse trawler that will catch the eye of sailors and power boaters alike. This is the classic 2-cabin version with a customized owners cabin featuring a king bed and additional storage. The Roughwater 41 offers all the amenities of larger boats in an easy to handle, very responsive, single engine trawler. She cruises at over 8 Knots at an economical 2.5 gallons per hour on a semi-displacement hull. Her prop and rudder are well protected by a full length keel, which combined with a draft of only four feet make her ideal for cruising. Owners moving on to world cruising, so she is available for her next cruising adventure.

Background and History of Abreojos

THE MEANING OF "ABREOJOS"

"Abreojos", literally translated, means "open eyes". However, when one uses the term, it may be describing something that looks like "open eyes."  "Abreojos" is not subject to literal translation. You won’t find the word in a Spanish dictionary.  It is more of an idiom or idiomatic expression deriving from a descriptive associated with a little town on the Pacific side of the Baja. However, as an idiomatic expression, it might be used to suggest, “Look out!” or “Check that out!” or “Wow!”

There is a place on the Pacific Coast of the Baja called Abreojos, after which Abreojos got her name. According to one storyteller, Punta Abreojos, Mexico was so named because, when fishermen came back from the day at sea, they witnessed perfect barreling waves coming around the point getting the tops blown off by the offshore afternoon breeze.  From the perspective of these fishermen, they believed they were seeing an open eye with an eyelash. Right?  Ergo, “Abreojos”.

A little about the cruising history of Abreojos…..at least since the current owner purchased her in 2002 with 1245 hours on the main engine.

Since 2002, the mighty Abreojos has left a memorable wake across the waters of the US and Canada, covering more than 50,000 nm. In addition to hundreds of cruises visiting all of California’s Channel Islands, Abreojos completed America’s Great Loop, a circumnavigation of the eastern half of the US. In doing so she travelled on the Gulf of Mexico from Rockport, Texas all the way to Key West, Florida; the West Coast of Florida and the Okeechobee Waterway; the Atlantic Coast from Key West to Providence, Rhode Island, including time on the Chesapeake Bay with side trips up the James and York Rivers, the C&D Canal, and all the way up the Potomac River to Washington, D.C. and up the Delaware River to Philadelphia. Abreojos rode the tides on the Hudson, East and Harlem Rivers, and transited the historic Erie Canal from Waterford all the way to Buffalo.  On the second time around the Loop, Abreojos diverted from the Erie Canal onto the Oswego Canal and crossed Lake Ontario into Canada and enjoyed the Trent-Severn Canals of Ontario, Canada, and the North Channel of Lake Huron, as well as the Saint Mary’s River and the Sault St. Marie. Abreojos has been on all of the Great Lakes (Erie, Ontario, Huron, Michigan, and Superior) as well as many of rivers that comprise the Western River System including the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers as well as the Ten-Tombigbee Waterway, the Mobile and Black Warrior Rivers. Recently, Abreojos spent almost two years cruising in the Pacific Northwest before finally returning home following a 1250 nautical mile cruise down the US West Coast from Seattle to Channel Islands Harbor.

Abreojos may not be the prettiest girl in the marina, but she is one of the most experienced boats around and has always brought the owners home.
