“ILLUSION”
1986 Hans Christian 38 telstar cutter
Specifications
Description
How the 38 Telstar Differs from the 38 Traditional Full Keel Model: The Hans Christian 38 Telstar cutter is a design of accumulated knowledge by a company that has built many world class cruising yachts. The design improved upon the older 38 Traditional full keel version, and improved the sailing characteristics of performance many fold. The underwater buoyancy was reduced by the Telstar’s modified keel design and mounting the rudder on a reinforced skeg, producing a modified fin keel. This allowed Hans Christian to use the taller rig of the Mark II 38 due to the reduction in buoyancy. At the same time, the lead of the mast was moved forward 12 inches, reducing weather helm greatly. The culmination of the new design resulted in a much higher performing yacht with all the good features of the older 38 T.
Illusion is the kind of boat that seldom comes along. If you as a buyer think about what a boat has to offer, you realize a boat reflects the pride and care of prior owners of the vessel. How the boat was cared for over the years is a major part of the evaluation process. This is reflected in the maintenance log and corresponding documentation, as well as what pieces of equipment are updated and replaced.
Illusion is such a boat. I sold her, new, to the first owner and knew the boat well. She has been well cared for by both the original owners and the current owners. The boat has had regular maintenance with equipment retired, replaced, or added to take advantage of new technologies. Over the last several years, Illusion has been outfitted with new sails, new electronics, a Forespar Leisure Furl for the main sail, new Lewmar anchor windless, new anchors, a bimini, cockpit cushions, new water tanks, and many comfort items. All working lines are led aft to the cockpit to increase both safety and efficiency. The hull was repainted in 2009, with antifouling paint to the bottom redone in 2012. Her 62 hp Perkins diesel engine is maintained by one of the best known mechanics in the Long Beach/San Pedro area. Her deep green hull, varnished teak, and tanbark sails make her a beautiful eye-catching yacht.
