If you haven't yet come across the designs of James Wharram, welcome. If you are familiar with Wharram boats, enthusiastic about the possibilities of minimalist cruising vessels, or simply enjoy well-designed and executed boats, here you go. In a nutshell, a Tane 27, built in 1979, was sailed down to Santa Barbara from the Bay area, purchased by the current owner who was planning on building a Tiki 30, but liked the way this one sailed so much that he decided to evolve it into a 30' Tiki/Tane. Up into the mountains we go, hulls trimmed back to the waterline, everything else jettisoned, and the rebuild begins. (Story continues in Detailed Specifications.) If you are thinking of seeing the world, or parts of it by boat, you would do well to consider the opportunities this boat has to offer. Put it into a shipping container and start your cruise in Tahiti or the Carribbean; pop it on it's trailer and start in the Pacific Northwest or the Sea of Cortez. The choice is yours. Come and look - you may change your mind about how you want to see the world.

What we're left with are the original keels, having the polyester and fiberglass stripped to three layers of 3/4" plywood laminated then epoxied and glassed to about a 3" thickness. More room was desired in both hulls, so beam was increased to provide the required space. New Ring Frames were fabricated to add an additional 4" flair. Length was also added, giving stability and lift. All construction is Marine Ply / Fiberglass / Epoxy inside and out with carbon fiber added at critical points (Lash points, hardware attachment points, etc.) Hulls, Cockpit, Trampoline Frames all have been finished in Awlgrip.

A cockpit was fabricated that includes seating and storage. Fore and Aft trampolines fill out the deck space, the rear hinged to provide a ladder into the water when beached. You can and will beach this boat. Dagger-boards are on board, but not rigged, as the seller says it sails just as well without them. The interior spaces are clean, bright and adequate for storage and living. 

The Gaff Rigged "Wing Sail" has two reef points and the roller furled jib has two as well. The sails are made by Jekells, the preferred sailmaker for this boat, and are one year old. There is an eight horsepower Yamaha Four Stroke Outboard engine with 200 hours on it. A trailer is also included for transport when disassembled, and a dolly for assembly and launching on a ramp.

Twin hulls with a large center cockpit. The Starboard hull has navigation gear and DC electrical distribution panel. Forward is a 6' berth, with a sliding seat that expands the berth length by 6+ inches. Face aft on that seat and you have a fold-down desk with storage aft.

Port hull Has the same layout with berth forward and desk aft, with storage aft of that. Forward in both hulls are deck hatches for access to voluminous storage. The forward trampoline is a great place to lounge.  

The cockpit area has bench seating with storage underneath. Access into the hulls is via sliding panels with plexi-glass domes for visibility. Center aft in the cockpit is a well that accommodates the 8HP Outboard motor that can be lowered for use and raised for sailing.

Aft of the cockpit is the trampoline with ladder that lowers for boarding from the beach. The rudders are mounted at he trailing edges of the hulls with control passing from beautifully varnished tillers to a controlling cross bar.

There is a single axle trailer and a set of dollies to be used in transport, assembly and disassembly of this very portable Catamaran. Set-up can be effected by a crew of 3-4 people and, after practice, should be done in 4-5 hours, trailer to water. Yet to be installed on this boat are water tankage, watermaker, galley equipment, head and waste tankage. Your purchase of this vessel starts the completion to your specifications. A good way to figure out what you would want to add might be to try boat-camping at anchor for periods of time and making a wish list.
