Highlights from professionals of the Sea Ray 400 (a good read)
Running the 400 is effortless; she’s predictable and well mannered, to the point that I never had to employ the DRS (Dynamic Running System, more on DRS to come).A reasonable throttle setting of 3000 RPM produces better than 27 knots and decent range from the single 352-gallon fuel tank; it’s forward of the engines to minimize running-angle variation as fuel burns off. The 400 is also quiet, thanks largely to a proprietary underwater exhaust system that I was delighted to discover doesn’t burble as the boat comes on plane.
Sea Ray’s Dynamic Running Surface (DRS). Imagine large movable triangles placed flat against the hull bottom in either aft corner, attached with with a hinge along the inboard hypotenuse. When deployed a ram above in a pocket pushes the whole thing downward, actually flattening the transom deadrise and generating considerably more lift than would conventional trim tabs. Manual control is standard but the hot setup is the automatic version that corrects trim anomalies without your intervention.
Low-speed maneuverability was noteworthy, thanks in large part to the fact that my 400 was fitted with the Cummins Inboard Joystick system. Developed jointly by Sea Ray, Vetus, and Glendinning, it employs an oversize 125-killowatt electric thruster that is powered by its own battery bank and charging system. The joystick lets you activate the thruster alone in one mode, or the thruster along with the engines in another. Either way, when the thruster kicks in you can really feel it, and the oversized motor should reduce the likelihood of a popped thermal breaker if you lean on the system a bit too long.
Leaving the harbor I immediately appreciate the “must-have” maneuvering joystick. Progression is good, the plane is reached with a hint of nose-up which doesn’t hinder visibility, while the speed performance is limited by the mentioned conditions of the hull. The real plus with Sea Ray 400 Sundancer is the handling: the boat is responsive to the helm inputs without being nervous, and copies driver’s commands with immediate changes of direction and ever tighter turns. The minimum plane is at 1850 rpm and 11.3 knots, for a consumption of 70 liters per hour, but even at a cruising speed of 20 knots the fuel need remains tolerable. I try to cross our wake to test the hull (which boasts a sporty 17° deadrise) and I am confirmed that we need much, much more to compromise the boat’s seaworthiness. With no creaking nor thuds, the Sea Ray 400 Sundancer cruises smooth and quiet.
The wide opening of the roof and the huge side windows provide great brightness inside and give full continuity between indoors and outdoors
A single level main deck seamlessly blends the main social areas and a galley-up design keeps the chef at the center of the gathering.
The platform itself is indicative of the thought that has gone into the 400. The hydraulic version you get a nifty stairway to port that automatically extends as the platform drops, making it ridiculously easy to access it from the cockpit and vice versa. The platform is resin-infused, which not only saves weight but also increases carry capacity by roughly 10.
Manufacturer Description
Entertainment comes naturally on the 400 Sundancer, with an open floorplan that creates generous, interconnected social zones throughout the boat. Large windows and a convenient sunroof, part of Sea Ray's SkyFlow Design™ philosophy, let in an abundance of natural light. Rich materials and finishes enhance aesthetics as well as comfort, while two full-beam staterooms invite you and your guests to relax, settle in and savor the full experience of life on the water.
