Overview

The MDR market routinely offers Beneteau 38 footers — but not like this one. The combination of a 2024 hull, zero deferred maintenance, a >$50k North 3Di sail inventory, upgraded Yanmar 3JH40, Schenker watermaker, solar array, full B&G electronics suite with multiple repeaters, offshore safety gear, dual anchors, tender package, and extensive rigging/deck upgrades represents a systems investment far beyond comparable listings. This vessel is ready to depart the slip this weekend for Santa Cruz Island — and with a provisioning run and a weather window, she is equally ready to cross to Cabo San Lucas next season. If one were to order a new Beneteau “sister ship”- the Oceanis 37.1- not only would it take over a year to order and receive it, but the cost for a basic model, BEFORE replicating the sails and most of the items and systems aboard Dorít, would cost well over $500,000!

Performance & Sail Inventory — North 3Di

The sail wardrobe aboard this vessel is, by itself, a compelling reason to look closely at this listing. Every sail is built by North Sails. The main and “everyday” jib are their 3Di composite construction standard, eliminating woven scrim, constructed panels, multiple laminate layering and Mylar film in favor of a continuous‑fiber laminate that is dimensionally stable, UV‑resistant, and immune to delamination.

Working Sails — Matched Sets (North 3Di)

Matched mainsail and “everyday” headsail to ensure redundancy for extended passages and optimal shape selection for conditions. Shape longevity is the defining 3Di advantage.

Additionally, the owner ordered a special “Offshore Passage/Delivery Jib” specifically for high-wind ocean crossings. This furling headsail features a low head height, high clue, vertical battens, and is made of NPC Cross-Cut NorDac material. It is intended for windy, long ocean passages such as a trans-Atlantic, or a delivery from Hawaii to the west coast, and to preserve the 3Di “everyday” jib.

Both jibs are designed to be “reefed” by simply rolling in the jib to the desired size, and moving the jib sheet deck cars forward using the adjustable car controls in the cockpit.

Code Xi (North 3Di)

Optimized for apparent wind angles from 0° to 60°. On the beam reach to Catalina in 8–12 knots, this sail transforms VMG and boat speed. This sail is commonly known as a “Code 0.”

Code 1.5 Asymmetrical Easy Furling Gennaker (North NorLon .75 oz.)

Offshore‑grade flying sail on a bow furler built for downwind passages in lighter air. Helix structure delivers exceptional projected area and stable trim.

A2 Aysymmetric Airx 650N spinnaker with masthead snuffer

Offshore grade A2 spinnaker with North’s premier snuffer system. True wind speed range is 10-19 knots. For deeper downwind sailing the spinnaker pole can be employed to move the tack outboard from the bow sprit.

Value Note: Replacing this wardrobe at current North 3Di pricing would represent >$60,000 in sail value — included at asking price.

Hull, Deck & Rig

Drawn by Finot‑Conq and since 2024 no longer in production, the Oceanis 38.1 is one of Beneteau’s most successful designs, with 782 hulls built. Dorít is Hull No. 760. The design features balanced moderate displacement, wide beam, and genuine windward ability. The fin keel with cast‑iron bulb (6'10" draft) drives righting moment deep and low. Dual rudders track true at heel angles that compromise single‑rudder designs. SA/D of 18.6 places the boat firmly in the performance‑cruiser band.

This vessel carries a “performance” mast, which is one meter taller than the standard rig, and the boom gooseneck is approximately a foot lower than the standard rig. This gives the boat outstanding performance in light conditions. Of the 782 hulls built, less than 40 “Performance” versions were ordered. Before ordering the boat, the owner read this article extolling the virtues of the Performance model but lamenting the lack of a traveler; the owner was determined to correct this…..and several other items as well! Accordingly, we believe this is the only Oceanis 38.1 with an actual cockpit floor-mounted traveler (Harken track and hardware) in the world.

At commissioning, the owner installed a Tides Marine StrongTrak mainsail luff track system, which requires special stainless slides for the mainsail luff. This fantastic system creates frictionless movement of the luff slides, making reefing and dropping the mainsail smooth and fast- and much easier to do if heading downwind.

In addition to the 3 downwind sails, there is a Seldon carbon spinnaker pole (painted grey) with butt‑car lift on the mast, which is used to sail deep downwind with a jib poled out “wing and wing”- a safe and secure way to sail deeply with a short-handed crew. There are four mast‑mounted sailing repeater instruments, and three reef points in the mainsail with brand new jiffy reefing lines. The two top battens of the main are full length. A heavy‑duty Harken Vang Master 6 pneumatic boom vang with custom-designed and strengthened mid-boom, gooseneck and lower mount were recently installed. This top-of-the-line system replaces the standard Selden vang and factory mounting components, all of which were under-strength for serious blue water voyaging. The original primary jib winches were Harken 35; the owner upgraded to Harken 40 winches, and added custom G-10 backup plates. The port cabintop winch is a two speed electric winch. Custom‑strengthened stern pulpits add offshore security. Flexiteek cockpit flooring, Sunbrella folding spray hood, and Sunbrella bimini complete the deck package.Additionally, there is a custom Shadetree “covered wagon” cockpit + deck sun awning. In 2024, the Owner replaced the original Facnor jib roller-furler with a Harken Mark IV system, including new anodized forestay sections. This is a much more robust and reliable system that is considerably easier to operate- an important consideration for sailors over a certain age. Owner also upgraded to new custom halyard sheeves for the 2 spinnaker and jib halyards, which replaced the factory sheeves as well as the backstay adjuster system which was upgraded in 2024 to a hydraulic Harken system with brand-new and stronger blocks and cordage.

Power and Propulsion

Powered by the Yanmar 3JH40, a 40 hp three‑cylinder common‑rail diesel — a meaningful upgrade over the standard 30 hp IDI engine. It drives a Flexifold 3-blade folding propeller. The Bosch high‑pressure common‑rail system delivers superior combustion efficiency, lower noise, and reduced vibration. Fuel economy improves, and cruising range extends from the 34‑gallon tank.

A complete engine service was performed in 9/2026. A Racor primary fuel filter replaces the Yanmar OEM filter for improved filtration. The 125‑amp alternator provides robust charging underway.
